“We have been listening hard to our customers about eggs from caged hens. Animal welfare is one of their top 10 issues of concern and we have responded by making a commitment to sell only shell eggs that are cage-free by 2022 and to use only cage-free ingredient eggs in our own-brand products by 2025. We're obviously pleased that Compassion in World Farming have recognised this.”

Sophie Throup, Senior Corporate Affairs Manager – Agriculture 2018

Compassion presented Morrisons with a Good Egg Commendation in 2008 when they committed to selling only free-range eggs under their own brand label. Unfortunately when the company re-introduced eggs from caged hens across their own-brand M-Savers range in 2012, Compassion was obliged to withdraw their Good Egg Commendation.

Now, Morrisons have committed to selling only shell eggs from cage-free production systems by 2022 and using only cage-free ingredient eggs in their own-brand products by 2025. As a result, we are pleased to be able to award Morrisons with a Good Egg Award in 2018.

"At Morrisons, our customers tell us time and again how important animal welfare is to them. We therefore continue to develop, innovate, measure and monitor animal welfare standards, and to work closely with the farmers and suppliers we buy directly from. We are pleased to receive The Good Calf Award in recognition of the efforts we are making now and in the future to ensure farm animals are well looked after at every stage of their lives."

Sophie Throup, Head of Agriculture, Fisheries and Sustainable Sourcing, 2020
