Compassion hosts first European Broiler Forum

News Section Icon Published 19/04/2018

Yesterday, Compassion hosted its first European Broiler Forum in London to help build knowledge and capability in tackling the various challenges involved in advancing broiler welfare.

The event was well attended by 50 delegates from leading food businesses across Europe, including genetics companies, producers, manufacturers, food service companies and retailers.

The aim of the forum was to bring together key stakeholders to discuss the barriers and solutions for adopting the requirements of the better chicken commitment.

This forum follows on from similar events held by Compassion in the US (in 2016 and 2017). Over 80 US companies have now made public commitments to achieving higher welfare standards for broilers.

Compassion opened the event, talking about the different aspects of the new requirements for broiler chickens, followed by breeding company, Hubbard, who explored the benefits of using higher welfare breeds.

The RSPCA was also represented at the forum and talked about their broiler breed assessment process.

The afternoon session included a number of roundtable discussions on key topics such as sourcing, economics and consumer perception.
