Leading Italian manufacturer, Barilla Group, has completed the switch to 100% cage-free eggs across its entire supply chain, one year ahead of its 2020 commitment.
After completing the transition in the USA, Turkey and Brasil, the company reached its commitment to only source eggs from barn systems globally well ahead of schedule.
All of the eggs used across Barilla's global operations from today will be cage-free, benefiting the lives of 2 million laying hens every year.
Their commitment to ensure higher welfare standards for laying hens will continue as the group is currently carrying out several activities to ensure the farms they source from are both fit for purpose and fit for the future.
Leonardo Mirone, Raw Material Purchasing Director, commented: "This commitment forms part of our “Good for you, good for the planet” sustainability program which we launched in 2010. Along with changes in European Legislation regarding the rearing of laying hens that came into force in 2012, and with support from Compassion in World Farming, we decided to challenge ourselves not only in Europe but across all our global activities.
“We committed to phase out cages from our egg supply chain by 2020 and are very proud to have achieved this goal a year in advance. This is but one of our recent achievements - we have also become an animal test free company."
Barilla has continually worked to improve animal welfare standards across its business and has received no less than four Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards from Compassion over the years. In 2018, Barilla was also confirmed as the highest ranking Italian company in the global Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare (BBFAW).
