The leading manufacturer and distributor of pork and poultry delicatessen products in France (with a turnover of €747.6 million in 2019) has just announced its decision to join the Better Chicken Commitment.
Fleury Michon has consequently positioned itself as the first major manufacturer to demonstrate its ambition to improve the welfare of broiler chickens throughout its French supply chain.
By 2026, Fleury Michon has committed to ensure that all of its products containing chicken (hams, charcuteries and delicatessen meals) comply with the Better Chicken Commitment criteria, which include: a reduced stocking density; the use of slower-growing breeds; an enriched living environment; and the use of more humane slaughter methods.
Gérard Chambet, Director of Operations and Purchasing at Fleury Michon said: "We are committed to ensuring that our corporate project, 'Helping people eat better every day', includes the 'Eating more responsibly' dimension. Our long-standing initiatives through the Organic Quality and J'aime sectors have led to significant progress.
However, it is by working collectively with all the stakeholders involved that we will succeed in developing our food-processing model in a sustainable and fair way and in making progress in the livestock farming sectors, taking into account their economic and technical constraints.
The commitment we are signing today gives us new objectives on which we will work actively with our suppliers and partners, including CIWF, to offer products that are good for human health and animal welfare and accessible to as many people as possible.”

We applaud this latest commitment to improve the welfare of broiler chickens and hope that it will inspire other manufacturers to follow their lead.
