“AN EMERGING CONSENSUS: A BROKEN SYSTEM

Our inefficient food system is threatening human health and environmental sustainability: … the current patterns of food production, distribution, and consumption largely fail to tackle these global challenges.”

Compassion recognises we are fast approaching a critical juncture and there is an urgent need to transform our global food system.

Current food production and consumption patterns are simply not sustainable. We need to change what we eat and how much we eat to ensure a sustainable future that benefits people, planet and animals.

Since 2010, Compassion’s Food Business team has been pivotal in driving change and raising farm animal welfare standards around the world by working in collaboration with leading food businesses.

Now, in response to this global climate, nature and health emergency, Compassion is launching a new initiative – Rethinking Food.

Committed to working with global food companies to bring about change, our Rethinking Food programme aims to reduce the impact of intensive animal agriculture on the environment, increase and promote more plant-based alternatives and move  industry towards a more resilient and regenerative food and farming system.

Through extensive stakeholder collaboration, key interventions, and practical tools, we will help businesses evaluate their current model, identify priority areas, build upon their sustainability goals and set strategies that are fit for the future.

Over time, these strategies will:

  • reduce our reliance on intensive animal farming,
  • rebalance the animal protein in our consumer offer, and
  • help to regenerate nature and restore biodiversity.

Now, more than ever, the pressure is on for businesses to produce affordable, healthy and nutritious food for all, by creating a more humane and resilient food system

Find out what businesses are already doing in this space and what our Rethinking Food programme has to offer.
