Carrefour Polska joins European Chicken Commitment

News Section Icon Published 20/05/2021

Today (20 May), Carrefour Polska became the first retail chain in Poland to sign up to the European Chicken Commitment (ECC), extending the reach of Carrefour’s commitment France.

All their own-brand products (fresh, frozen and whole chicken and branded products containing more than 50% chicken) will meet the higher welfare criteria of the ECC by 2026.

Carrefour Polska publicised this latest commitment to improve broiler chicken welfare alongside their other animal welfare credentials which include a ban on the sale of live carp (from 2020), and a move to cage-free own-brand shell eggs (from 2020), alongside a commitment for cage-free own-brand egg products and branded shell eggs by 2025.

Marek Lipka, Member of the Management Board of Carrefour Polska said: “Issues related to the improvement of animal welfare and respect for the natural environment are our priority in the long-term development strategy of Carrefour's own brand products.

Already two decades ago, when our chain introduced its first own brands, mainly Quality from Nature, we took a number of actions in the field of animal welfare. Joining the European Chicken Commitment is another step towards improving the quality of our Carrefour private label products and activities for the benefit of our planet.”

Dr Tracey Jones, Global Director of Food Business at Compassion in World Farming: “We wholeheartedly congratulate Carrefour Polska for becoming the first retailer in Poland to make this commitment for higher welfare chicken. I hope it will give confidence to other retailers across Europe to follow their lead.

“Poland is the largest producer of meat chickens in Europe and as such is a key market for driving change so we look forward to working with Carrefour and their suppliers in Poland on their road to implementation.”
