In April 2023, Auchan France joined the Association Etiquette Bien-Etre Animal (AEBEA) labelling scheme and committed to display the animal welfare labelling on its Label Rouge, organic and Auchan core range of chicken.

In September 2023, Auchan launched its first labelled products in-store. Its Label Rouge chickens are now labelled Level A, guaranteeing a higher level of animal welfare and access to a covered range for the chickens.

The Better Chicken Commitment

Auchan is also fulfilling its commitment to uphold the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC) criteria and is displaying Level C on its core range of chicken products that are BCC compliant (15 products in total).

By the end of October 2023, consumers will be able to find Level C higher welfare chicken in all Auchan’s supermarkets in France. Level C, denoted as "higher welfare indoor production" is the first level guaranteeing a significant improvement in animal welfare and the best possible level for chickens reared indoors.

Commitment to transparency

Compassion congratulates Auchan France on its commitment to transparency by displaying the animal welfare labelling scheme on its chicken and welcomes the progressive implementation of its commitment to comply with the Better Chicken Commitment criteria.

BCC-compliant chicken in the UK

Consumers seeking chicken reared to the BCC standards in the UK can visit M&S where 100% of its fresh whole and portion chicken (under the Oakham GoldTM label with RSPCA Assured certification) is compliant with the BCC criteria.

Other UK supermarkets offer a range of BCC-compliant chicken, such as Tesco’s ‘Room to Roam’ or Morrison’s ‘Space to Roam’, but these typically only make up a very small proportion of the supermarkets’ full chicken offer.
