Today, alongside more than 210 organisations across Europe, we are supporting the launch of Good Food For All, a new European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) calling for urgent reform of the EU’s food and farming policies.

Europe’s food system is at a breaking point. Industrial food systems are drivers of food insecurity, climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, antibiotic resistance, and animal suffering.

However, this year EU citizens have the chance to demand a food system that respects animals, restores ecosystems, and provides healthy food for all.

A tool to transform our food system

An ECI gives EU citizens an opportunity to have a say over decision making. By collecting one million signatures, citizens can require the European Commission to consider new legislation.

This ECI calls on the EU to guarantee Good Food For All, with an interconnected systemic approach to the food system, which means a just and resilient food system that gives everyone access to affordable nutritious food, protects animal welfare, is sustainably produced, and provides fair farmer livelihoods.

To achieve this, Europe must urgently move away from intensive factory farming towards regenerative agriculture and more plant-rich diets.

Why we need change

For decades, factory farming has shaped Europe’s food system. It produces cheap calories but comes at a cost: it is having a devastating impact on animal welfare and is the big reason why humanity is now facing a climate, nature, and health emergency.

Meanwhile, small-scale and regenerative farmers, the people producing food in ways that protect the land, struggle to compete.

By signing the ECI, citizens have the chance to be heard at the highest level of the EU.
