We have warmly welcomed the new EAT-Lancet Commission 2.0, a scientific report which offers a bold and hopeful roadmap for transforming our global food systems to benefit the health of people, animals and our planet.

Building on its groundbreaking 2019 predecessor, this updated report sets out a compelling roadmap for feeding nearly 10 billion people by 2050, without breaching planetary boundaries or compromising human health.

The Commission, made up of leading scientists from across the globe, reaffirms the importance of the Planetary Health Diet: a predominantly plant-based approach rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds.

If adopted globally, this diet could prevent up to 15 million premature deaths each year, dramatically reduce chronic disease, and help restore balance to our ecosystems.

Beyond human health

From an environmental standpoint, the stakes could not be higher. The report finds that the way we produce food is the single largest cause of biodiversity loss and a major driver of climate change. Even if fossil fuel emissions were eliminated, current food production alone could push global warming past the critical 1.5°C threshold.

However, there’s good news – the EAT-Lancet 2.0 shows that shifting to the Planetary Health Diet could:

Cut food-related emissions by over a third
Reduce antimicrobial use by 42%
Significantly ease pressure on land and water resources
Benefit biodiversity

Factory farming's role

For animal agriculture, the implications are transformative. The report signals a one-third reduction in ruminant meat production and a 24% reduction in pigs and poultry by 2050. This would not only benefit the climate and biodiversity but also open the door to kinder, regenerative farming systems.

The report also tackles the issue of fairness in our food system. It calls for equal access to healthy food, protection of farmers and food producers and urgent action to reduce the harm our food system causes to the most vulnerable communities.
