Impact Rating Assessment

The 2025 report is the third since BBFAW introduced its more stringent Impact Rating (A-F), designed to assess whether companies are delivering meaningful welfare improvements on the ground – such as adopting cage-free systems or reducing stocking densities on farm.

At the top end of the scale, Marks & Spencer, Premier Foods, and Fonterra lead the way, each achieving a high ‘B’ Impact Rating, demonstrating clear evidence that their animal welfare policies are translating into real, measurable benefits for animals.

Encouragingly, five companies improved their Impact Rating this year, including Asda (Bellis Topco Ltd), ALDI (ALDI South Group), Cranswick PLC, Hilton Food Group and LDC Groupe.

The number of companies receiving the lowest rating of ‘F’ has also continued to fall for the third consecutive year, dropping from 129 in 2022 to 120 this year.

However, overall progress remains slow, as for the second year running, almost 90% of companies (135 companies) received the lowest Impact Ratings of ‘E’ or ‘F’, indicating limited or no evidence of higher-welfare commitments being implemented in practice. No company has yet achieved the Benchmark’s top ‘A’ rating.
