On the edge of the Amazon

Taking place on the edge of the Amazon in the city of Belém, Brazil, this year’s unique location is a reminder of what’s at stake. The Amazon, a haven for biodiversity and a vital carbon sink, is under threat. Deforestation, driven in part by industrial animal agriculture, is destroying one of our greatest natural defences against global warming.

A critical moment for global climate goals

This year all countries are expected to submit new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) – their national plans for meeting the limit of 1.5°C global warming.

We’re here to urge governments to include measures to reduce emissions from industrial animal agriculture in their NDCs. The livestock industry is responsible for 18% of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions – and this is expected to grow – so meaningful climate action cannot be achieved without addressing it.

Farmers on the frontline

We’re giving a platform to Brazilian farmers, with personal experience of climate disasters. Their stories reveal how disasters – such as increasingly extreme floods – are harming farmed animals, livelihoods, and food security.
