Info Sheet on Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin PMSG

Published 20/02/2024

Pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) is a hormone produced in pregnant mares (female horses) to synchronise pregnancy in intensively farmed sows.

PMSG is produced on blood farms where blood is violently extracted from pregnant mares leading to the suffering of horses.

While the practice is in breach of EU law, there is nothing to stop producers importing the hormone to maximise the production of pork products.

This document explains what PMSG is, how and where it is produced, the welfare issues for mares and sows and the alternatives available.
